Gateways are the software files that create and manage connections between the cloud, Neuron App, and the various connected devices.

There are different types of gateways depending on the protocols they use to intake data.

Here are some of the gateways based on protocols:

IO-Link gateways

These gateways use the IO-Link protocol. They necessarily need a specific version of the Neuron Edge software to be created and installed to operate and an IO-Link Master as a gateway module to communicate sensors and the cloud.

Their nature makes them a safe, fast and efficient choice.

MQTT gateways

As its name implies, these gateways use the MQTT protocol for data intake. This protocol makes data extremely lightweight so devices can upload data directly to the cloud, without the need to generate an installation-specific version of Neuron Edge.

In contrast, they do require multiple certificates to be downloaded to the installation’s industrial CPU and authenticated for operation.
